The brute-force runner sweeps catalogued cipher families across parameterized keyspaces and gates everything on the four Sanborn cribs. Soft-crib submissions add a different surface: a guess about what the plaintext is at specific positions, used as a search heuristic to narrow the keyspace inside any of the supported families. The Contributor tier exists because the soft-crib pipeline is the only part of the project where outside hypotheses materially shape what gets tested.
Both tiers get the same co-credit on the verified solution— if your theory produces the plaintext that passes the four-of-four verification gate, you're named as co-author on the methodology paper and the public solution page.
